Running Hot by Jayne Ann Krentz
Running Hot is the fifth book in the Arcane Society series by Jayne Ann Krentz. Grace Renquist is hiding from her past. Luther Malone is recovering from a gun shot wound. Both had messed up childhoods. Both are aura readers. Fallon Jones, head of Jones & Jones, a kind of psychic investigative team, sends Grace to Hawaii to profile a suspect's aura and figure out if he's the murderer they're looking for. Because Grace is inexperienced in the field, he sends Luther as her body guard. From the first time they see each other in the airport concourse, there's an instant connection. They're drawn to each other. The mission was supposed to be simple. Get in, profile the suspects aura, and go home. But they stumble onto an executive meeting for Nightshade, and evil psychic organization that Jones & Jones has been investigating and trying to shut down. Someone puts a hit on the suspect they're supposed to be profiling. Everything gets crazy from there. People are trying to kill Grace and Luther. Luther takes Grace to his apartment. She meets his friends, who are like family to him. His friends help protect Grace when someone comes after her. And bonds are created. There's a lot of adventure and suspense and love. I love a book where the characters' family lives are messed up but they go on to create their own definition of family. Their friends are their family. I can connect with those characters because my family unit is small and not all of our relationships are good. So my friends have become part of my family. In the end, good wins over evil and the characters live happily ever after together. It only took me two days to read it. I didn't want to put it down. It's one I would recommend.
